Extending XR: Free Creative Technology Training Launches Across North Yorkshire

A new training programme from the XR Stories team at the University of York is helping people across North Yorkshire develop skills in creative technology - completely free of charge.

Extending XR is designed for adults living in North Yorkshire who are interested in exploring the rapidly growing world of immersive and extended reality (XR) technologies. The programme offers a series of short, practical workshops aimed at building foundational skills while introducing participants to new tools for digital storytelling.

Exploring Storytelling in a Virtual World

The first phase of the programme is centred around the theme “Storytelling in a Virtual World”, giving participants the opportunity to explore how creative technologies can be used to bring ideas and stories to life.

Each workshop focuses on a different area of XR production, including:

  • 3D scanning and modelling
  • Basic animation and performance capture
  • Creating virtual environments

Participants can choose to attend one, two or all three sessions, depending on their interests. All equipment is provided, making the workshops accessible to beginners and those looking to build new skills.

Training Across North Yorkshire

To make the programme accessible to as many people as possible, workshops will take place in locations across the region, including:

Malton, Richmond, Settle, Scarborough, Skipton, Thirsk, Whitby and York.

Both daytime and evening sessions are available, with workshops running between March and July 2026.

Supporting Creative Technology Skills

Programs like Extending XR play an important role in developing digital and creative skills across the region, helping people gain hands-on experience with technologies that are shaping the future of media, storytelling and interactive experiences.

York Science Park is always pleased to see initiatives like this emerging from the University of York’s innovation community, supporting learning, creativity and new opportunities across North Yorkshire.

Those interested in taking part can find more information and book a free place on the XR Stories website.
