York Science Park Blog - 3 reasons why your start-up needs an office space

Office space can be one of the biggest expenses that start-ups face. With so many essential costs, office space is often at the bottom of the list. It’s possible to run a business – even with quite a sizable team – working remotely, from home or from coffee shops, so why does your startup need an office space?

We might be biased, but we think offices are actually a pretty important part of running a business.

So here are a few reasons why we think you should consider an office space…

1 – Presentation

We all know that how you present yourself is important if you want to win over new clients, keep your existing ones and expand your business. It’s not a case of pretending to be something you’re not, your business can be as quirky and individual as you want it to be. Your offices can showcase your brand identity, whilst ensuring that your customers are still confident in your ability to carry out your services. It’s not just about the office itself, desks filled with mess and piles of paper isn’t always what your clients would want to see. They want to see a space that shows them you can do what you’ve said you can do. So maybe less of the ‘spare bedroom chic’, more ‘professional yet cool space’?

2 – Culture & Identity

Your company culture runs through everything you do and your office should be no different. You want it to be a professional space that represents you and your company. Find office space that lets you show your identity. Think about how to add identity to your space – can you put up some great wall art, or decorate the walls themselves? Vinyl art work is a flexible way to decorate spaces, and can come in almost any pattern or shape. There are of course limits, as beautiful as the ‘google style’ offices are, reports have shown that actually slides and half a train parked in the middle of your office have ‘gimmick written all over them’ that won’t last the test of time.

3 – Staff Engagement

Your staff will probably be the biggest investment you make when you start your business, so it’s important to keep them engaged. An office isn’t the only way to engage your staff, but having a place they can consider as ‘work’ is a good way to help them shut off when they go home, and hit the ground running at the start of the day. Having a place they can be proud of will help them feel much more like ‘part of the team’. Can you afford to have your staff struggling to stay engaged?
