Welcome To Women In Tech York’s May Event!

Who are we?

We are a community of like-minded people studying, working or interested in technology.

 

Our goal is to run events in which we can share our knowledge and interests as well as encourage and empower one another. This event is not exclusive to women; we welcome anyone passionate about tech and increasing diversity in the field.

We also welcome all students who are interested in learning more about Tech, and the careers it entails.

This month…

We’ll be talking all about State of Mind with Emma Cowling and Josie Tulip!

Emma Cowling is a business coach, working with women in tech to help them become the strong authentic leaders that this industry needs. She has worked in tech for nearly 20 years, starting as a software engineer, but moved fairly quickly into a tech management role, where she was responsible for developing people and setting the strategy for future tech developments, which led her to invest in coaching. Before moving into self-employment a year ago, she set up Digital Creativity Labs at the University of York, a large interdisciplinary centre set up to encourage collaborations between academics and the games and media industries. While she’s spun-out start-ups for others before, she is now self-employed and learning what its really like to have your own business – and loving it!

Josie Tulip is currently completing their PhD in Speech and Language Sciences at Newcastle University and is passionate about ensuring that individuals with disabilities have the same access to education, work and health as those without disabilities.

Have you noticed that some days you’re on it, you’re full of ideas, you spark off other people and things just fall into place. Other days everything feels like a struggle and a fight. Anything that can go wrong does.What’s the difference? Well the biggest factor is usually our state of mind. Yes there are good days and bad days, but it is too easy to decide that todays a bad day and the worlds against you – because it will be.We experience the world through our thoughts – and so our thoughts create our world. Positive psychology suggests that we should therefore change our thought – but that isn’t really that easy to do, and trying to change your thoughts can create an underlying stress and pressure.What can make a huge difference is being aware of our thoughts and how they translate into our experience. Developing this understanding can lead to less stress, less pressure – and most importantly the ability to react in the most appropriate way for us when things do start to feel like they go wrong.In this talk I’ll share an understanding, first expressed by the philosopher Sydney Banks, which has changed my understanding of life and given me increased resilience, greater flow, insight and creativity beyond my expectations.As women in tech, we are often under pressure to conform to the structure and approaches created by a male dominated environment. This understanding gives insight on how we can navigate this world on our own terms.

  • 19:20: The mutual benefits of neurodiversity in the workplace: How to best support workers with a different perspective – Josie Tulip

The talk will outline who neurodivergent people are (ASD, dyslexia, ADHD etc), and how they can benefit the workplace. It will also talk about the stigma of being neurodivergent, and how most workplaces are currently not suited for these individuals. Further, I will talk about how much of the support is typically suited to male-facing expression of these conditions, and what differences may be seen in women and those socialised as women, and how to better support these people too.
