We are looking to recruit a senior statistician to join our expanding Health Economic Modelling (HEM) team to lead and undertake a wide range of data analysis and health economic modelling projects. The successful candidate will also support the NHS and Public Sector team and opportunities also exist to work with members of our information services group on evidence synthesis projects. We are a health economics contract research and consulting company owned by, and based at, the University of York. YHEC provides consultancy and research to a wide range of public and private sector bodies. Our clients include:

  • Government bodies, such as the Department of Health
  • NICE and the SMC
  • Global pharmaceutical manufacturers
  • Medical device and biotech companies

Our HEM and NHS teams undertake research to quantify the cost-effectiveness of a range of health technologies (pharmaceuticals, medical devices, public health interventions) for a range of large and small clients within the public, private and charity sectors. We work across a broad range of therapy areas including orphan and ultra-orphan indications developing budget impact models, and undertaking statistical analyses of individual patient-level data in order to parameterise our economic models. We also work closely with our clients in preparing their submission dossiers to agencies such as NICE and we actively look to publish our work in peer-reviewed journals.

In collaboration with the Centre for Health Economics (CHE) we are the Economic and Methodological Unit (EMU) for the NICE Centre for Guidelines (CfG). As part of our work within EMU we produce the economic analyses and associated economic models to NICE specifications to aid the Public Health Advisory Committees in guideline development. We also carry out projects to address methodological issues identified by the CfG.

Main Purpose of the Job

The key role of this post is to contribute to the further development of YHEC by identifying opportunities for growth, preparing research proposals and by managing clients and project work. The post will report to the Associate Director, Health Economic Modelling.

Main Duties

The senior statistician will contribute to the performance and profitability of YHEC Ltd in the following areas:

Business Development

  • Income generation by identifying opportunities and preparing proposals / tenders for YHEC to carry out projects in health economics and related areas.
  • Marketing of YHEC; including attending and presenting at national and international conferences and preparing marketing material.
  • Tender / proposal presentations to potential clients.

Project Work / Management

  • Lead the design and development of statistical analysis of data from clinical trials and real world / registries.
  • Manage projects to deliver work which meets the project objectives within the planned timeframe and budget.
  • Expand the range of statistical services offered by YHEC, particularly in the area of evidence synthesis.
  • Supervision and training of junior statisticians.

Client Management

  • Ensure client expectations are managed from proposal to completion.
  • Attend client meetings and maintain good working relationships with all clients.

Presenting / Publishing

  • Ensure all opportunities for publishing work are pursued at conferences and within journals.

Personal Specification

  • We are looking for an individual with a proven track record of designing and developing statistical analyses for economic models as well as project management in medical statistics, health economics and related areas.

Essential qualifications, knowledge, skills and attributes are:

  • A post-graduate degree in medical statistics, mathematics, or a related quantitative discipline.
  • Detailed knowledge and experience of preparing statistical analyses.
  • Experience of working in applied statistics gained either within a consultancy, industry, HTA agency or academic setting.
  • Ability to write clear and concise proposals / tenders to generate income.
  • Project management skills and experience.
  • A high level of attention to detail and accuracy and a commitment to high quality.
  • Ability to plan and prioritise own work on multiple projects in order to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate new and complex information effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Experience of writing publications for peer reviewed journals.

Terms of Employment

Posts at YHEC are permanent and subject to regular review of performance. Staff are appointed for a trial period of six months, following which employment will be confirmed, subject to successful performance.

Salary

The salary will be in the range of £38,000 to £50,000 subject to qualifications and experience. There is a profit sharing pay scheme in operation at YHEC. Membership of a defined contribution or defined benefit pension scheme is available subject to eligibility criteria being satisfied.

Annual leave entitlement will be 30 days per year, plus bank holidays.
