he Prime Minister has launched a new £3m fund to support creative and cultural organisations across the Northern Powerhouse. The money will enable arts projects and enterprises, in areas including Cumbria, Manchester, Lancashire, Leeds, Liverpool, Sheffield and Yorkshire, apply for £150k of government funding. This follows the announcement earlier in the year that the Government will commit £11m through the Northern Cultural Regeneration Fund to support three cultural projects in Blackpool, Bradford and the Lake District. Read more...

A PILOT event in York provided businesses with an insight into potential future talent and students with an opportunity to learn about local employers. The 'Challenge-a-thon’, held in the Innovation Centre Conference Suite at York Science Park, brought together a cross-section of the city’s students and three local businesses. Such was its success, a plan is now in progress to develop the initiative further. Delivered in response to feedback from bioscience companies, Science City York organised the event to instigate professional interaction with students from Askham Bryan, York College and York St John University. Read more...

Meridian Line Films are thrilled to receive an award at the 7th China Academy Awards of Documentary Film (CAADF), for their recent documentary series, China: Time of Xi, broadcast on Discovery Asia-Pacific, CCTV-4 and CCTV-9 from October 2017. Hosted by Danny Forster, Dr. Jordan Nguyen and Mary-Ann Ochota, the series reached hundreds of millions of people worldwide. The series itself focuses on what drives Xi Jinping, who must maintain the growth of the world’s second largest economy, and what China can offer the world. YORK researchers say they have found no evidence to support the theory that video games make players more violent. A team from the University of York conducted a series of experiments with more than 3,000 participants who were asked to play games. They found that video game concepts did not ‘prime’ players to behave in certain ways and that increasing the realism of violent video games did not necessarily increase aggression in game players. Read more...

Initially started last year to bring together York-based and regional technology business, Tech Scene York has gone from strength to strength and is now back for 2018 under the new banner of Tech York.
