New creative strategy for York set out
A new strategy has been unveiled to develop York as a "creative and cultural powerhouse of the north" and bolster the creative and digital industries within the city.

York is already a UNESCO City of Media Arts and the home of several hubs of innovation, including York Science Park and Digital Creativity Labs.

The new creative industries' strategy will provide support for the existing businesses and attract more businesses to come and live in York to ensure sector growth in the city.

By 2024 it aims to increase the number of creative businesses by 10 per cent and bring in £195m to the York economy.

It focuses on four key objectives: developing the workspace offer in the city, strengthening the talent pipeline between graduates of the two universities in the city and local creative businesses, enable greater business development including networking between creative sector professionals, and raising the national and international visibility of the innovative work being done.

The strategy was unveiled by Science City York, part of Make It York, which undertook a survey of 140 creative businesses in the city.

Steve Brown, managing director of Make It York, said: "The creative industries are one of the fastest growing sectors in the UK and a valuable contribution to the UK economy. Creative businesses also help York attract professionals and students and provide more jobs and so it's crucial to foster that."
