Business Development Manager - York Science Park

The Business Development Manager contributes to the development and implementation of organisational strategies, policies and practices. Reporting to the CEO and a member of the Management Team along with the CEO, Operations Manager and Facilities Manager, this position's primary responsibility is to maximise space occupation and promotion of the organisation and our customers, locally, nationally and internationally.

You will assist in the implementation of the strategy, objectives and business plan and ensure that the day to day operations of the business run smoothly. Responsible for improving performance, productivity, efficiency and profitability.

You will provide a professional first impression to residents and visitors, always ensuring a high standard of customer service.

Responsibilities and Duties

Duties include but are not limited to those listed below.

Strategic Management

  • Contribute to the development and achievement of operational objectives and strategy geared towards operational excellence.
  • Contribute to planning and delivering YSPL’s innovation services portfolio. Ensure support is fully developed and actively delivered to spin-outs, start-ups and fledgling businesses.
  • Involvement in financial management, liaison with the company’s accountants as required, including budget preparation and ongoing budget review. Challenging expenditure and ensuring value for money.
  • Provide leadership to teams, motivate staff to achieve company objectives and conduct yearly appraisals.
  • Continuous development of the sales and marketing functions.


  • Manage/oversee the entire sales process for every enquiry including viewings and administration.
  • Conduct negotiations of licence fees to meet targets and attain budgeted occupancy levels
  • Liaise with facilities with the requirements of new residents
  • Manage the licence review for each resident on a continual basis.
  • Market and sell to external clients YSPL’s conferencing business [and facilities management service]
  • Deliver presentations and tours for visitors to the park ensuring every opportunity is taken to raise the YSPL profile


  • Develop and implement an annual Marketing Plan which incorporates YSPL’s goals and objectives including a SWOT analysis, rental rate targets and occupancy level targets
  • Manage and develop the YSPL corporate brand and collaterals
  • Conduct market research of the core business and competitors to produce recommendations for improvement
  • Organise and/or attend networking events, dinners and exhibitions to maintain YSP’s high profile

Resident Relations and Business Support

  • Manage the Induction and Exit Interviews in partnership with the Facilities Team for all residents
  • Manage the annual resident review process to include face-to-face meetings
  • Manage the annual UKSPA/Statistical date review process
  • Plan and coordinate a Business Support Programme for residents
  • Plan and coordinate social networking events for YSPL residents
  • Provide advice, support and signposting for residents where necessary
  • Seek out opportunities to expand the provision of innovation and support services offered to residents
  • Engage local networks and partner organisations and develop relationships to assist residents in signposting
  • Ensure aspects of the YSPL Resident Handbook is kept up-to-date


  • Supervision of the Business Development Assistant/s giving guidance and support where necessary
  • Identification, monitoring and control of individual KPI’s and training needs
  • Provide cover for Business Development Assistant role.
  • Collate the sales and marketing information for the Management and Board Reports
  • Manage and ensure all records on CRM Database are kept up-to-date and accurate
  • Ensure FAME/Companies House and financial checks are taken for all potential residents
  • Liaise with Accounts /Credit Controller to raise initial invoices for new residents and to ensure all outstanding payments are correctly chased and managed
  • Manage relationships and contracts with all sales/marketing suppliers to ensure best price and quality of products and services delivered

Monday – Friday 8:45am– 5:30pm (Flexibility to work additional hours as required). Salary up to £30,000 per annum Deadline for applications – Sunday 10 December 2017.
